I was watching Border Wars on National Geographic and began to consider the 14th amendment which reads in part "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States." I could understand how "jus soli" would be effective in developing countries as a means of increasing its population and at the conception of the United States constitution, but over 200 years later? Other countries such as the UK and France have introduced a modified version of jus soli to impose some additional requirements for children of foreign parents, such as the parent being a permanent resident or having lived in the country for a period of time. Makes sense.
